So many things in this modern world carry with them the heavy weight of taboo. Women are taught to hide away their menstruation, and hurry it along, living life the same their week of bleeding as any other. But I believe in the power of moontime, and the extra-sensitive intuitive nature we have the power to possess as women. I have found that my spiritual awareness, and deep sense of knowing is highest during my week of bleeding, and I feel more magical, intuitive and connected during this week than any other time. There are so many practices, rituals and habits that heighten this bliss and connection, bringing us up even higher, to play and learn with our feminine essence. And of these, one of my favorites is painting with my menstrual blood, a truly blissful experience.
Here comes the taboo, crushing down for those who are afraid to be present with this idea. If you are feeling uncomfortable, stop for a moment to think about why. Usually it is a sense of fear, of judgment. What will others think of me? Is it strange to enjoy these moments, when most women wish them away?
Don’t be afraid, sister, hold my hand as we walk into this dark place together. It’s okay if you haven’t been here before, it’s safe, and it’s warm. This is the blood that represents your power, your divine nature, your true beauty. So deep, the color red, so beautiful, full of power! Just as any painter picks a hue that’s penetrating, vibrant and inviting to the senses, we have here, the perfect medium to create a gorgeous piece of art. Our very own blood, all natural, free from chemicals, and filled with feminine energy.
Make this a sacred act, and a moment to let go, and let your heart guide you. Collect your blood in a small bowl, and find a safe and comfortable space to create your painting. Play some gentle music, or enjoy the silence. Light some candles, burn some incense or essential oils. Clear the energy in the air and allow yourself to be fully present.
Now fix your eyes on the sight of your blood, smile, and breathe in this moment. Be thankful for it’s arrival, and think for a moment of all that it represents. Sink into the deep red hue, and the darkness you may feel at this moment. Feel free, now, to express any emotions, fear, excitement, passion, inspiration or grief. Express it here, and now by letting it bleed onto this paper and out of your mind. You can create with a paintbrush, toothpick, cotton swab or even your fingers. Anything will do! Smell your blood and connect yourself with it. Feel this sacred energy, and appreciate your body for all of the hard work it does. Remind yourself of your strength and your potential. Beautiful woman!!!!!
This can be done at home, privately, and kept in a hidden place for you to gaze at when you need some inspiration, or a reminder of your strength. Or, it can be done in a circle with your closest sisters, who are trusting, gentle and flowing with love for you.
Even if it feels strange, or a bit scary, women, I invite you to try this sacred practice, and see for yourself. I always feel so connected, grounded and comfortable when painting with my blood. Something about this deep red blood strengthens and pushes me ahead with confidence. I dream of all the things I will do this month, and all the things I will create. I rest for a moment, and just enjoy the beauty my blood. I am Her, you are Her, we are all women of creation, powerful, pure and wild.
Feel the release, the flow, and the disappearance of tension. Enjoy your week of bleeding, and the aliveness, the rawness of being a woman. We are all connected, and I see each of you in the reflection of my blood, and it truly warms my heart. Hello, goddess, I am talking to YOU!
With much love and appreciation,
Happy moontime, and happy painting.
And to the mothers with daughters, break the taboo. Make it sacred. Show this to your daughters. Rituals enrich, and moontime is worthy of this praise.
Now go, my love…create something beautiful!
